The Arsenal manager has played down fears that the Chilean winger was injured by a bad tackle last night.
In his press conference after last night’s victory over Galatasaray, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger played down fears of yet another injury, insisting that Alexis Sanchez’s removal was for purely tactical reasons.
Sanchez was subject to a late tackle from Gala defender Felipe Melo in the first half and was pictured on the bench nursing his ankle with an ice-pack after he came off, but Wenger insisted that he could have played on.
“I took Alexis off to be a bit more solid defensively once we were down to 10 men [...] he looks alright,” the Frenchman said.
The Arsenal manager was irritated that Brazilian Melo was not dismissed for his violent lunge: “It could have been a red [...] it looked from where I was that it was a red.”
Wenger also confirmed that Jack Wilshere, who came on as a late sub last night, would be fit to play 90 minutes against Chelsea this weekend.
The Gunners are currently suffering something of an injury crisis with several first team stars sidelined with an array of problems.
